VS

Shoremen Ring in the New Year! Holiday CHAMPS!

The Shoremen took the floor Saturday night looking to go 7-0 and to bring home the Avon Holiday Tournament Championship and they did just that!  In front of a Shoremen-side packed house, Tommy Kuzniar opened the 1st quarter with his first of two 3-pointers as Elyria Catholic threw a 1-1-2-1 Match-up zone at the Shoremen.  Full court pressure by Avon Lake generated some nice scoring opportunities for the Shoremen with Firment and Kuzniar teaming up for a nice trap, steal and lay-up pushing the score to 7-5 at the 4:49 mark.  Kuzniar drilled another jumper, 9-8, followed by a nice pass from Bryce Alurovic to Parker Russell who was fouled going to the basket. Russell split the pair.  Tim Daniels followed with a drive, foul and two free throws which ended the quarter Avon Lake up 12-9.

The second quarter started with Jeff Ickes netting a foul line jumper.  Elyria Catholic countered with a Box-n-1 defense on Kuzniar trying to slow down the Shoremen sharpshooter.  The Shoremen started to make a run when #11 Cody Schuster was fouled shooting a 3-pointer and hit the free throw for a rare 4-point play cutting the Avon Lake lead to 14-13.  Nick Firment followed with a nice 3-pointer (his first of two) from Kuzniar.  However, EC tied it up from the Free Throw line as EC was in the bonus early as the ref’s got “quick-whistles” in the second quarter.  Nick Hamilton hit 1 of 2 free throws to tie the game 21-21 and followed with a nice lay-up on a pass from Mike Herrilko pushing the Shoremen up 23-22.  Hamilton, working the boards relentlessly, was fouled, and made the free throw (24-22)  On the last in-bounds play of the half Dan Outcalt stole the pass and quickly found Nick Firment open at the foul line for the last second basket of the half and a 26-22 halftime lead!

The third quarter started like the previous two with a Shoremen score.  This time Brian Mielcusny started with a nice driving lay-up.  Mike Herrilko quickly joined in with a strong put back and was fouled delivering a 3-point play to put the Shoremen up 31-26.  The Shoremen defense stiffened making it difficult for EC to move the ball with continuity.  A strong effort was made to control the boards as Hamilton, Ickes, Russell, Herrilko and Homenik were aggressive generating second chances at the offensive end.  Kuzniar hit his second 3-pointer pushing the lead to 37-28.  Nick Hamilton split a pair of free throws and followed with a jump hook as the quarter ended with the Shoremen commanding a 40-28 lead.

The fourth quarter was all Shoremen as Parker Russell was put on the line and hit 1 of 2 (40-30).  Jeff Ickes followed with a strong move in the paint for two.  Elyria had to start shooting the long-ball and found themselves coming up short.  Brian Mielcusny executed a perfect back door from Firment pushing the lead to 46-35.  Elyria Catholic could not maintain the pace against the very deep, talented and athletic bench and were worn down midway through the 4th.  The game well in hand the Shoremen preserved the win at the free throw line.  When the clock ran to 0:00 the Shoremen were the 2007 Avon Holiday Tournament Champions ((54-39) and had extended their record to 7-0!  Next stop…HOME vs. the Eagles of North Olmsted (7-2).
