VS

Theres’s N.O. place like HOME!

The Shoremen brought their impressive 7-0 record to their packed “House” Friday night playing cross-town neighbor and nemesis North Olmsted (7-2) Friday night.  The undefeated Shoremen quickly jumped out front on a nice reverse lay-up by Brian Mielcusny, the Eagles found Matt Roman #10 for one of his three 3-pointers on the evening to go ahead 3-2.  Nick Firment and Mike Herrilko worked a nice pick-n-roll for two points and a foul, which Herrilko finished the three point play, Shoremen up 7-3.  Jeff Ickes was fouled powering through the paint and hit two more free throws pushing the lead to 9-4.  Brian Mielcusny hit a transition 12’ baseline jumper from Mark Homenik to make it 11-4.  Avon Lake’s up-tempo style was too much to handle for the short-handed Eagles who basically played six boys the entire night.  Two quick baskets by 6’7” Chris Arlinghaus #42 cut the lead to 11-8, however, Tommy Kuzniar and Mark Homenik both found the bottom of the net to end the 1st quarter up 15-8!

The second quarter opened up with Nick Hamilton scoring two on a nice under the basket “power-up” shot.  Parker Russell followed up a Shoremen miss with a sneaky put-back for two nudging the lead 19-10 at the 5:08 mark in the second. However, from this point it was all Eagles as the tempo of the game changed slowing down to the Eagles delight.  N.O.’s Arlinghaus hit two more back to back baskets cutting the lead 19-16. Brian Mielcusny extended the lead to 21-19, but the Shoremen would not score for the rest of the period and Chris Arlinghaus buried a three at the end of the second to push North Olmsted on top 23-21 at the half.

The start of the third quarter saw the Shoremen forge ahead on Nick Firment’s 3-pointer , 24-23.  Kevin Kilbane #32 countered with his own 3-pointer on a three possession set for North Olmsted.  Not to be outdone Firment squared-up for a Shoremen three making it 27-26 AL.  Mike Herrilko making his presence known in the paint swatted away multiple shots (7 blocks on the evening) making it tough for the Eagles to penetrate the middle as both teams exchanged baskets.  With the score 29-30, Mielcusny and Firment initiated pressure in the back court resulting in a steal and lay-up pushing the Shoremen back in front 31-30.  Jeff Ickes followed a Eagle basket with a Foul-line jumper 33-32.  Trading baskets with Kevin Kilbane from North Olmsted, Mike Herrilko hit an in-the-paint floater from Kuzniar 35-36.  The quarter ended with Matt Roman drilling a 3 pointer pushing North Olmsted up 39-37. The Eagles made adjustments at the break to slow the pace as the up-tempo first half clearly benefited the Shoremen.  The slower half court game helped keep the short-handed Eagles in the game.

The Shoremen opened up the 4th trading baskets as Mielcusny and Chirs Arlinghaus made it 39-41 Eagles.  Matt Roman #10 found the bottom of the net for 3, 39-44.  The Shoremen found it difficult get open shots in the set offense as North Olmsted’s adjustments made it tough cutting off the passing lanes on the Hi-LOW offensive set.  Parker Russell, followed a Shoremen miss for two closing the gap 41-44.  The Eagles began slowing the pace offensively taking time off the clock and the Shoremen changed to the “open” offense which make the Eagles work harder and opened up the game offensively resulting in two more for Parker Russell.  However, Arlinghaus hit a 3-pointer with 1:35 remaining to make it 49-43 Eagles.  The Shoremen had to foul at the 1:30 mark to get the Eagles to the foul line as the game was relatively foul-free to this point.  With just over a minute, Jeff Ickes stole the ball and quickly found Brian Mielcusny for a lay-up, foul AND a Technical Foul on the Eagles Arlinghaus (mouthing off)…a potential five-point play!  Mielcusny made the Free Throw and Tommy Kuzniar made one of two Technical Foul Shots, 47-49 Eagles with 52.9 seconds and the Shoremen ball!  On the ensuing play the Shoremen were stripped of the ball on a drive to the basket and had to foul Matt Roman who made both free throws 51-47 with 30 seconds remaining.  Dan Outcalt and Bryce Alurovic teamed up with an apparent steal last second steal, but a late whistle brought it back.  The Eagles made 1 of 2 free throws to seal the win making 52-47 and the clock ran out on the Shoremen…However, THIS series is NOT OVER…as the RE-MATCH is on February 8th at North Olmsted, I’m quite sure the boys will be ready!

Avon Lake vs. N. Olmsted

The 5-2 Shoremen JV basketball team faced an eight member North Olmsted Eagles squad split evenly between juniors and sophomores on Friday, January 4th.  The Shoremen started strong with Trenton Toy taking the opening tip to the rim for an early 2-0 lead.  North Olmsted kept pace, tying the score at 5.  Ben O’Connor hit a three-pointer to put the Shoremen ahead at 8-5.  After some back and forth action Kyle McNamara hit Dan Olemacher with a nice pass for a driving layup which turned into a three point play as Dan was fouled on the play.  #32, a quick, strong Eagles forward made a nice move to the hoop to close the first quarter scoring at 12-10 Avon Lake.

Both teams struggled with shooting and some sloppy play in the second quarter.  The Eagles seemed content with launching 3-point shots while the Shoremen pushed the ball up the court and tried to get the ball inside.  Midway through the second quarter the Eagles advanced a 3 point lead, 15-12.  After a Mike Magyar foul shot finally broke the second quarter ice for Avon Lake, the Shoremen scored a couple of baskets highlighted by Dom Whitfield’s driving layup to knot the game at 17.  Ben O’Connor’s second 3-pointer pushed Avon Lake to a 2 point lead but the Eagles tied the score at 20 at the half.

The third quarter pace was quicker with more scoring from both teams.  The Eagles started hitting their 3-point shots and surged to a lead but two layups by TJ Thompson and another nifty Kyle McNamara fast break pass to Dan Olemacher cut the score the 30-29 Eagles.  The Eagles continued their hot shooting as the left handed guard #20 hit two straight and pushed ahead 39-29.  Pat England answered with a 3 and Dom Whitfield and Brandon Muck contributed but the Eagles answered the charge and maintained their lead.

In the fourth quarter some key Shoremen turnovers combined with good passing and shooting from the Eagles pushed their lead to 49-39.  Throughout the fourth quarter the teams continued to trade baskets.  Dom Whitfield scored 6 fourth quarter points to help keep Avon Lake in the game but the Eagles did a good job of converting free throws to keep the lead.   The Shoremen intensity picked up toward the end but it was not enough as the Eagles prevailed 58-51.
