Text Box: SHOREMEN PULVERIZE THE PESKY METEORS!
The Shoremen desperately in need of a SWC win to get them back in the race got just what they needed Friday night against the Midpark Meteors.  The Shoremen were at full strength with Jeff Ickes coming off a 3-game absence with a case of pneumonia.  Mike Herrilko gave the Shoremen the opening tip, and following a 2:30 dry-spell Jeff Ickes broke the ice putting the Shoremen up 2-0. Brian Mielcusny running the break added a lay-up 4-2 Avon Lake. Kuzinar followed with a lay-up on a nice no dribble 3-pass-only fast break off the press.  Midpark completed a 3-Point play to cut the lead 6-5.  Mike Herrilko working inside dished up an old fashioned “toilet-ringer” as the ball used all 360 degrees before dropping through the net, 8-5 good guys.  Midpark answered Herrilko’s shot with a 3-pointer and the score was 8-8 after one.
The Shoremen mixed up the personnel a little in the second quarter with Outcalt, Alurovic, England, Russell coming off to spare some legs. Midpark made a quick 3-point play and two more free throws to go up 13-8.  Kuzniar hit a put back 2nd chance rebound 13-10 Meteors and also netted a much needed 3-Pointer to go cut the lead 14-13.  Midpark scouted the Shoremen well and consistently dropped back into a Zone defense satisfied to force the Shoremen to shoot, except Kuzniar.  The Shoremen could counter the Zone with zone breaker shooters Outcalt and Daniels to compliment Kuzniar; it was Tim Daniels that got the call.  After missing the mark on his first two, a good shooter keeps shooting and Daniels delivered twice from behind the arc pushing the Shoremen into the lead 19-18 at the half!
The 3rd quarter started with Nick Firment hitting a 3-Pointer 22-18.  Both teams now in a man-to-man defense.  Midpark went on a run to go up 23-22, time-out Shoremen.  Jeff Ickes hit two in the paint to put the Shoremen up 24-23.  Midpark countered with a 3-Pointer 26-24 Meteors.  Brian Mielcusny hit a 15’ jumper on the baseline to tie the game.  Mike Herrilko kept up his heroics blocking shots and protecting the basket, but the Meteors found pay-dirt closing out the quarter on a last second shot to go up by 4, 30-26.
The 4th quarter started out slow as the first points weren’t delivered until the 6:27 mark on Parker Russell’s lay-up from Kuzniar. Tommy followed with a lay-up of his own to tie the game.  Parker Russell took advantage of poor blocking out and hustling in position for two consecutive athletic “tip-ins” to put the Shoremen up 34-30.  Midpark quickly re-grouped beating the Shoremen press for an easy two.  Parker Russell falling out of bounds delivered tight-rope save to Jeff Ickes under the basket for an easy two.  Parker was rewarded at the end of a press break for another easy two, 38-32 Shoremen.  The Shoremen started managing the clock before shooting but Midpark kept crawling back with 3-Pointers and turnovers by the Shoremen in-bounding the ball off the press, 40-37 with 16.1 seconds.  Jeff Ickes was finally fouled on the ensuing inbound pass and sank the free throws to give the Shoremen a much needed shot in the arm, 42-37 SWC WIN pushing their record to 10-6 / 6-4.  Next up Olmsted Falls (9-7 / 8-2) (away) who is playing excellent basketball of late crushing Amherst 74-47 this weekend, should be a “barn-burner” in Olmsted Falls.  GO SHOREMEN!

Text Box: JV Shoremen Blast Meteors

The 11-5 Shoremen welcomed the Midpark Meteors to Avon Lake. The Shoremen were seeking revenge after a one- point loss earlier in the season. Leading most of the game, the Shoremen were sent home stunned by a three-point buzzer beater.

The Shoremen came out of the gate fast, as Mike Magyar received the opening tip off and drove the lane for a quick two. Magyar was hot early as he scored the first 6 Avon Lake points and the Shoremen lead 6-4 in the early going. Baskets by Greg Stephens and Dan Ollenmacher pushed the Shoremen lead to 10-6 at the 3:00 minute mark. Ben O’Connor, Trent Toy, and Kyle McNamara entered the game and had an immediate impact. McNamara had a steal and assist, O’Connor grabbed two rebounds, and Toy contributed two free throws. Brandon Spitzer also contributed with intense defense and a key rebound. The Midpark guards kept the game close in the first quarter with some nice drives to the basket. However it was not enough as the Shoremen lead 12-8 after one.

The second quarter was hi-lited by a good defensive basketball by the Shoremen. The Meteors turned the ball over on several occasions, which lead to easy buckets for the speedy Shoremen. Freshman Ron Willoughby entered the game midway through the second quarter and was a significant contributor. Two key rebounds and an assist by Ron helped push the Shoremen lead to 16-10 with 4:00 remaining in the first half. Steve Heine drove the lane and dished off to Trent Toy who muscled in a lay-up for two points. A fifteen-foot jump shot by Ollenmacher closed out the first half scoring for the Shormen. In all, the Shoremen sank 10 of 11 free throws en-route to 23-13 half time lead. Local Optometrist & loyal Avon Lake fan Dr Scott Seipel shouted, “ This is sweeter than a Reece Peanut Butter Cup”.

In the third quarter the Shoremen continued with relentless pressure defense and some timely offense. Brandon Muck scored on a driving lay-up, Mike Magyar drained a 15 ft jumper, and TJ Thompson scored on a reverse lay-up. Midpark matched the intensity and sank several long- range jumpers to keep the game within reach. With 4:22 remaining in the 3rd quarter the Shoremen lead 25-16 and had the game under control. For the balance of the 3rd quarter the Shoremen and Meteors traded baskets. Leading the way for the Shoremen were a variety of players. Brandon Muck, Dom Whittfield, Dan Ollenmacher, and Trent Toy each scored and the Shormen lead after three 32-23.

The Shormen put the game out of reach early in the 4th quarter. A driving lay-up by Greg Stephens & and 18 ft jump shot by Mike Magyr put the Shoremen ahead by 13 points with 5:15 remaining. Midpark tried to get back in the game by scoring 5 unanswered points but the Shormen responded with 6 of their own. Willoughby banked one in off of the glass, Muck drained a 15 footer, and Thompson made a running one hander in the lane pushing the Shoremen lead to 45-27 with 3 minutes remaining. For the last three minutes of the game, the Shormen ran out the clock by imitating the four-corner stall made famous by North Carolina coaching legend Dean Smith. A great ending to a great game
