Avon Lake

Shoremen

Admiral King

VS

Admiral King “Rumbles” w/ JV Shoremen

This game should have started with Michael Buffer’s famous,

Let’s get ready to rumble!

Avon Lake started, T.J. Thompson, Trent Toy, Brandon Muck, Dom Whitfield and Greg Stephens.

The Admirals’ starters were good size, quick and to say aggressive would be an understatement. It was apparent early, that Admiral King was not going to allow any “uncontested” shots. Whitfield and Muck both experienced this first hand when they were “hammered” going to the hoop. The Shoremen showed patience on offense and did not get flustered. Stephens scored on the inside, to get the Shoremen started from the field. Coach Fitch went to the bench when play started to get sloppy. Mike Magyar, Dan Ohlemacher and Trent Toy worked extremely hard underneath, with absolutely no help from the officiating. King hit a 3 point shot and had a few fast break baskets. The Shoremen beautifully executed a play to end the quarter, with Ben O’Connor cutting inside and laying it in, as the buzzer went off. Avon Lake had numerous drives inside, but they were unable to finish with baskets. The score after the first quarter was Avon Lake 10 and King 8.

King started the second quarter with a turnover and immediately called a timeout with only 18 seconds off the clock. The sloppy play continued from the first quarter and it became clear that King’s “reaching in” was going to be allowed. King hit a 3 pointer and had an impressive drive to the hoop for 2. These were their only points of the quarter. The Shoremen did not score from the field the whole quarter. They were able to hit 5 free throws for their only points. Again, Avon Lake had opportunities and drove to the basket but they could not finish. The score at the half had Avon Lake up by 2, at 15-13.

The third quarter started where the first half ended, very physical and very rough. King dropped a quick jumper and tried to push the tempo a bit. While the inside play was punishing, Avon Lake began to have some success. Magyar hit two in a row and Whitfield drove hard to the basket for another score. Stephens added a jumper and the Shoremen executed a long inbounds pass and shot, for their final score of the quarter. While the scoring increased, King matched the Shoremen, point for point. At the end of three the Shoremen held onto their 2 point lead 27-25.

Nothing but net, as King started the quarter with a 3 pointer. TJ countered with a beautiful drive to the hoop and finish for 2. Dom added another basket on the inside and then things dried up for the Shoremen. King hit a couple of jumpers and then went inside to their big man. He was not able to make his shots, but went to the charity stripe and made 3 of 4 down the stretch. Avon Lake converted on an inbounds play to Whitfield for 2. Then after getting the ball back, set up a final play with 5.5 seconds left in the game and down by 3 points. The final 3 point shot was just short, we got the rebound and put it back up on the inside and missed as the buzzer sounded.

The Shoremen had multiple opportunities throughout the game, but had trouble “finishing” on the inside. The defense did a good job holding King to just 36 points.  The game appeared to be the most physical of the year, with the Shoremen coming up just short at 33-36.

The next game is the anticipated re-match against Midpark where the Shoremen suffered a last second shot loss…Go Shoremen!

Text Box:
The (9-5/5-4) Shoremen visited Lorain to take on non conference neighbor Admiral King (7-6/1-2) Tuesday night.  The Shoremen were in desperate need of a solid game and a win to get the "ship" headed in the right direction.  Mike Herrilko gave the Shoremen the tip to start the game but Admiral King capitalized on a Shoremen turnover to go up 2-0, then 4-0.  The Shoremen opened with a 1-2-2 match-up Zone Defense hoping to slow down the fleet of foot Kings.  King responded with a 3-Pointer to extend the lead to 7-0.  Tommy Kuzniar broke the ice for the Shoremen with a 18' jumper 7-2.  Nick Firment hit a driving lay-up to cut the lead 7-4.  Brian Mielcusny got on the board with a lay-up on the left side 7-6, but A-King opened up their lead on numerous Shoremen turnovers and sharp 3-point shooting by A-King to 19-6 with 2:11 in the quarter.  Brian Mielcusny and Nick Hamilton both hit for 2 closing the gap to 19-10 with 41 seconds remaining and Tommy Kuzniar closed out the quarter with a buzzer beater to make it 21-12 Admiral King.
Mike Herrilko opened up the second quarter with a nice tip in 21-14.  Mielcusny followed with a lay-up 21-16 and the Shoremen looked like they were going to make a run.  However, the nasty turnover "bug" stayed with the Shoremen as in previous games making it difficult to match baskets with the fast King group.  Nick Hamilton cut into the lead 23-18 with a nice two and Kuzniar followed with a 14' baseline jumper to make it 25-20.  The closest the Shoremen got to regaining the lead was 25-22 when Mielcusny found Kuzniar on a back door lay-up.  But, Admiral King responded by pushing the lead to 34-22 at the half.
The third quarter opened with Kuzniar's lay-up on a nice pass from Parker Russell 34-25 King.  Admiral King responded on a 3rd chance put-back, but Kuzinar drilled a 3-Pointer to counter, 36-28 King.  On the next possession Kuzniar hit another two to make it 39-30.  Pat England hit for two in the paint on a nice pass from Mark Homenik 41-32.  Turnovers again riddled the Shoremen as it seemed to be a struggle to get the ball into the half court set.  Admiral King finished scoring the final 8 points making it 49-32 at the end of the 3rd quarter
The 4th quarter started with Admiral King nailing a 3-Pointer to go up 20, 52-32.  The Shoremen could muster only a free throw from Parker Russell after 4 minutes in the quarter.  Admiral King followed with the first slam-dunk on the Shoremen to push the lead to 54- 35.  The pressure defense by Admiral King overwhelmed the Shoremen as they were unable to get into any offensive flow. Dan Outcalt fouled while driving to the basket netted two free throws to make it 56-38.  Mark Homenik pushed the Shoremen to the 39 point mark on split free throws and Loren Kennedy split two pair of free throws to finish the scoring for the Shoremen. At the end of the game the Shoremen were left on the dock 59-41.
Next up for the Shoremen (9-6/5-4) the conference foe Midpark Meteors (6-9/2-7) at HOME Friday night.  Let's hope the Shoremen find a way to get rid of the "turnover" bug in order to get back on their winning ways!  Good Luck & GO SHOREMEN!
