Avon Lake

Shoremen

Amherst Comets

VS

JV Shoremen Pound the Comets into Space Dust

The game started with Mike Magyar controlling the opening tip and from that point on Avon Lake controlled the entire game. Within the first fifteen seconds Magyar was at the line hitting one of two free throws followed by a driving layup from Greg Stephens to get the Shoremen rolling 3-0. An Amherst Comet basket followed to make the score 3-2.  That would be the last basket for the Comets in the opening quarter as Avon Lake put on a stifling trap defense that yielded turnovers and set up several open looks. Dan Ohlemacher came in with the second rotation and hit two straight three pointers. Trent Toy added a couple of buckets to end the quarter with the score 13-2.

The second quarter saw all the AL front court players - Dom Whitfield, TJ Thompson, Brandon Muck, Kyle McNamara, Steve Heine and Brandon Spitzer - continue to apply fierce pressure that caused total disruption to the Amherst offense. Stephens and Whitfield capitalized on turnovers scoring two quick buckets putting the Shoremen up 17-4. Ohlemacher continued with the hot hand hitting his third straight three. The Comet’s back was broken when they tried to press early, only to have Whitfield throw the inbounds pass the entire length of the court to a hustling TJ Thompson for an easy layup. Steve Heine stroked a three and Magyar ended the quarter with four more points to put the halftime score at 29-12.

The third quarter started with a scoring “alley oop” pass from Ohlemacher to Magyar that brought a loud cheer from the crowd. Brandon Muck scored on a quick steal followed by two more buckets from Magyar. Trent Toy and Brandon Spitzer (a three) rounded out the scoring and the Shoremen found themselves up 42-16.

The fourth quarter was all about patience for the Shoremen as the guards Spitzer, McNamara, Thompson, O’Connor and Heine worked the ball inside to Magyar and Toy. The two post players delivered all the scoring for the Shoremen in the fourth quarter leading to a 54-23 Shoremen win. Magyar ended the game with 15 points, Toy 12, Ohlemacher 9, Stephens 4, Spitzer 3, Heine 3, and Muck, Thompson, Whitfield 2 a piece.

Text Box:  COMETS SINK SHOREMEN
Coming off their worst loss of the season the Shoremen (9-4 / 5-3) should have been ready to take out their frustration on their cross-town rival Amherst Comets (5-7 / 3-5).  Having beaten the Comets early in the season the Shoremen came out firing in the first quarter, unfortunately not connecting.  At the 6:48 mark in the first quarter there was still no score as both defenses prevailed.  Mike Herrilko continued dominating in the paint and registered numerous Comet blocks.  Brian Mielcusny finally broke the scoring drought with a fast-break lay-up 2-0 Shoremen which turned out to be the only Avon Lake lead of the game.  Amherst tied the game 2-2 at the 4:20 mark and pushed it to 5-2 on a three pointer.  Following another Shoremen turnover it was 7-2 and a few more turnovers it was quickly 12-2 before Avon Lake knew what hit them.  The Comets hit two free throws to make it 14-2 after the first quarter.
Amherst hit the first two of the second quarter, 16-2 Comets.  Nick Firment hit a foul line jumper to make it 16-4 and Parker Russell hit a nice two down-the-lane to make it 16-6.  Nick Hamilton netted two free throws to cut the lead 16-8.  Tommy Kuzniar racing into the paint hit two 18-10, but Amherst followed with an uncontested 3-Pointer 21-10 Comets.  Parker Russell, playing his best game of the season hit a turn-around “J” in the corner cutting the lead to 21-12.  However, Amherst went on a mini-run pushing the lead 26-12 before Parker Russell split a pair of free throws and Kuzinar drilled a 3-pointer to make it 26-16.  Parker Russell finished out the half with a fade away jumper and was fouled to make the score 27-18 at the half.
Brian Mielcusny split a pair of free throws to start the 3rd quarter 28-19, but two back-to-back uncontested 3-pointers by Amherst pushed their lead to 36-21.  Russell capitalized on a three point play 36-24 but Amherst went into their deliberate slow-down offense which generated easy lay-ups pushing the game to 39-26.  Bryce Alurovic was fouled driving to the hoop and split the pair 39-27 with 1:36 in the third. Parker Russell followed with a nice overhead bank shot and one to cut the lead to 39-30, but Amherst responded with a quarter ending two to make it 41-30.
The Comets continued their domination in the 4th with a driving lay-up to make it 43-30.  Unable to run, the Shoremen were “cold” in the half court set and continued their 7-game trend of being content with an extremely high turnover ratio.  Amherst found an easy two off the out-of-bounds play pushing the score to 46-30.  Parker Russell and Tim Daniels both split pairs of free throws making it 46-33.  Parker followed up a Shoremen miss for an easy lay-in 50-36 and Mielcusny also split a pair to make it 50-37.  Amherst now sensing the win took their time executing their offense and despite shooting miserable shooting from the charity stripe kept the game at a comfortable arms length.  Brian Mielcusny finished the game with a nice two from Parker Russell and two free throws to make the final 58-44.  Now, having lost 5 of 7 the Shoremen will need to reconsider their personnel approach and make serious adjustments if they expect to make some “noise” in the last half of the season.  Next up…non-conference foe Admiral King Tuesday and SWC Midpark at HOME!  GO SHOREMEN!
