JUNIOR VARSITY SHOREMEN CLIP THE CARDINALS
The Junior Varsity Shoremen basketball team carried a three game winning streak and four victories in their last five outings into Saturday night’s home game against the Brookside Cardinals. When the night was over, neither the frigid weather outside nor the Brookside Cardinals inside could cool the red hot Shoremen. The JV’s rolled to a 64-23 victory.
The tone of the game was established early. Dom Whitfield won the opening tip which was grabbed by Pat England. England promptly torched the nets for a three ball. The Shoremen applied full court pressure early and frustrated the much smaller Cardinals. Within one minute of the first half, England canned his second three. Trent Toy grabbed four rebounds and a steal within the first two minutes of the contest. Guard, T.J. Thompson contributed with an early steal and an alert pass to Brandon Muck for a fast break lay-up. Before Brookside could look up the Shoremen led 8-0.
Murmurs of ‘looking good’ could be heard throughout the gymnasium. By the time Coach Fitch made his first round of substitutions the score was Avon Lake 10 and Brookside 0. The Shoremen defense held their opponent scoreless until 28.9 seconds remained in the first quarter. After one quarter it was 28-4 Shoremen.
Steve Heine, Brandon Spitzer, Brandon Koprowski, Mike Magyar, and Toy continued with good defense as the second quarter began. Toy and Magyar controlled the boards and released sharp outlet passes to Koprowski, Heine, and Spitzer. Coach Fitch worked his rotations. Contributors were many. Greg Stephens, Kyle McNamara, Dan Olemacher and others continued to harass the Brookside offense with solid half court defense. The score at half was Avon Lake 38 – Brookside 14.
England, Thompson, Heine, Toy, and Whitfield started the third quarter. Within seconds, Thompson had another one of his steals and passed to Toy for an easy bucket. The quarter ended with a Stephens’ rebound and a pass to a hustling McNamara for a fast break lay up. After three quarters were in the books it was Avon Lake 51-Brookside 18.
It was more of the same in the fourth quarter. Midway through the quarter Spitzer scored to put the Shoremen up 56-23. Heine followed with the next four points by hitting a jumper from the corner and a fast break lay-up to increase the Shoremen lead, 60-23. As the clock wound down the Avon Lake Junior Varsity basketball team improved its record to 9 wins and 3 losses with a 64 to 23 victory.
Whitfield, Magyar, and McNamara led scoring with 8, 8, and 7 points respectively. Koprowski, Toy, England, and Stephens each scored 6 points. Spizer, Heine, Muck, and Olemacher rounded out the balanced scoring attack with 4 points each.
Coach Fitch, Ass’t. Coach Vonderau, and the Shoremen appear focused as the second half of league play begins this Friday (1/25/08) at Home vs. Westlake. |

SHOREMEN KEEP CARDINALS in the NEST! After putting up a lackluster effort against the 3-9 Berea Braves the night before, the Shoremen needed a team to take out their frustration. Their prayers were answered on Saturday night as the short-handed Brookside Cardinals flew into town. The game was virtually over before the opening tip as Jared Ramirez #12; Brookside’s only legitimate threat was injured the night before. The Shoremen jumped on the Cardinals early and often stealing the ball regularly off of the full court press. Jeff Ickes, Tommy Kuzniar, Brian Mielcusny and Nick Firment all capitalized on the cut-winged Cardinals. At the 5:33 mark it was 12-2. By the 3:27 mark Brookside had already tried a zone, and used three time-outs to slow the Shoremen down now up 18-2. The Shoremen finally brought in reinforcements at the 3:27 mark in the quarter; Mark Homenik, Daniel Outcalt, Parker Russell, Nick Hamilton and Tim Daniels, not losing any momentum and promptly extended the lead 23-2 at the end of the 1st. The second quarter saw five boys much deserving of playing time take the floor; Dan Outcalt, Nick Hamilton, Parker Russell, Mark Homenik and Tim Daniels. The group, playing together for the first time this season pushed the lead to 27-5 in less than two minutes before additional reinforcements were brought in at the 6:10 mark in the second quarter. At that point, Bryce Alurovic, Pat England, Loren Kennedy, Parker Russell and Mark Homenik extend the lead by pushing the ball up the floor and tenacious defense. During this segment Bryce Alurovic had some nice passes and Pat England and Loren Kennedy picked up their first varsity points! The twin towers, Herrilko and Homenik continued to make their presence known in the paint each delivering numerous blocks on the much shorter Cardinals. At the end of the 2nd quarter it was 35-7 Shoremen. The 3rd quarter started out much like the first with Jeff Ickes capitalizing on steals and pressure defense to extend the lead. Nick Firment capped off the Shoremen run with a 3-pointer at the 4:22 mark to push the Shoremen lead to 48-7. At the 3:44 mark in the 3rd the reinforcements arrived again not losing any momentum pushed the lead 50-7 on Dan Outcalt’s steal and lay-up. Parker Russell got into action for two on a nice feed from Outcalt. Tim Daniels drilled a three from the left wing and Dan Outcalt picked-the-Cardinal point guard pocket again for an easy two. The quarter finished with Outcalt splitting a pair from the foul line after being fouled on a steal to make it 58-9 Shoremen. The 4th quarter saw Bryce Alurovic, Danny Olemacher, Brandon Koprowski, Pat England and Loren Kennedy take it to the Cardinals. Olemacher and Kennedy cashed in on numerous turnovers and excellent passing from Alurovic and England. Koprowski had two back-to-back driving lay-ups late in the quarter making it 71-12 with 1:25 to play. Pat England finished off the game with an easy 2 to make it 73-13 Shoremen. Next up another Friday/Saturday double-header against SWC Co-leader Westlake, and the always tough Amherst Comets! Go SHOREMEN!
