Berea Braves

VS

Avon Lake  Junior Varsity Tomahawks the Braves

(Junior Varsity Game Summary)

The Junior Shoremen got off to a slow start this evening, spotting Berea a 7-0 lead. The Berea team looked pretty quick, but the Avon Lake trapping defense gave the Braves trouble and forcing them to turn the ball over. Eventually the Shoremen settled down. Dan Olemacher caught fire with a 3 pointer, followed by a steal, which he converted to a bucket and one.  At the end of the first quarter the Shoremen had climbed out of the hole and found themselves up by the score of 10-9.

The second quarter became much more physical, as the referees allowed both teams to play. Brandon Muck had a great hustle play, diving to the floor for a loose ball and tossing it ahead to Mike Magyar for a basket. Berea kept it interesting with their big man working the inside and their guard hitting a 3 pointer. Avon Lake continued to take advantage of turnovers and pushing the ball up court. Between Dom Whitfield and Brandon Koprowski, it seemed like a track meet, as Berea was unable to slow the Shoremen down.  At the half, Coach Fitch had been able to work everyone into the game and Avon Lake had started to take control. The score at halftime had Avon Lake in front 29-22.

The third quarter began a bit sloppy, with both teams struggling to hit their shots and to control the ball. It got to the point where the referees had to start calling some of the fouls, and they did. Avon Lake pressed Berea full-court and shut them down, allowing only 5 points in the 3rd quarter. The Avon Lake offense started to heat up from behind the three point line with both Patrick England and Dan Olmacher draining 3-Pointers. The free-throw line also became instrumental in providing many of the Shoremen points, as the Braves players became more frustrated. The Shoremen had extended the lead to 14 points at the end of the quarter and led 41-27.

The Shoremen started the 4th quarter strong with Brandon Muck quickly scoring twice on the inside. This caused Berea to call a time-out less than a minute into the quarter. Play went back and forth for a while with their #21 keeping it interesting. As time went on, Berea ended up playing more as individuals, than as a team.   The Shoremen were able to beat their press by going over the top and closed the game out with a 54-41 final score.  The Shoremen look forward to Brookside Saturday night!

BRAVES SCALP the SHOREMEN for 2nd SWC LOSS!

The Shoremen (8-2) looking to sweep the back-to-back Friday/Saturday schedule with Berea (3-9) and Brookside (1-8) to go 10-2, was abruptly stopped by the Berea Braves as they dismantled the mighty Shoremen.  The first quarter started with Brian Mielcusny and Jeff Ickes netting easy baskets 4-0 Shoremen. Mike Herrilko continued his season block-shot presence with a number of blocks but the Braves were there to put the block back up for easy baskets.  The Shoremen half court trap gave the Braves fits causing numerous turnovers in the first allowing the Shoremen to run with the ball and get good looks at the basket.  Mielcusny hit a 13’ elbow jumper to push the Shoremen up 8-4 but Berea wouldn’t go away tying the game 8-8 at the 1:49 mark.  Jeff Ickes powered up for two after a good series inside and Mark Homenik blocked the Berea attempt to get the final shot off at the end of the quarter.  10-8 Shoremen – 1st.

The second quarter opened up with Parker Russell hitting Mark Homenik, 12-8 Avon Lake.  At this point the Braves changed their game plan and took a page out of Amherst’s book and decided to run a very deliberate offense avoiding running with the more athletic Shoremen.  Berea hit a three pointer 12-11 Shoremen, but, Tommy Kuzniar followed with an easy lay-up 14-11.  Deliberately slowing the game down allowed the Braves to stay close and they did it by getting second and third shots on the boards.  At the 1:44 mark it was 18-14 Shoremen.  Another late quarter turnover by the Shoremen allowed Berea to finish the half with 2 baskets tying the game at just 18-18 at the intermission.

Halftime adjustments were expected to get the game tempo back to the Shoremen liking, but the Shoremen came out in a half court man-to-man non-trapping light pressure defense which allowed Berea to set up their offense and continue to slow the game down.  Berea went up 19-18 on a free throw for their first lead of the game.  The Shoremen traded baskets with Mielcusny hitting nice back to back shots for the Shoremen making it 22-25 Berea.  Berea pushed the lead with inside play 27-22 and Jeff Ickes responded with a foul-line jumper to cut the lead 27-24.  At this point, the game slowed dramatically until Dominque Thompson (Berea) finished off a momentum-breaking 3-Point play to makes it 30-24 with 2:21 in the 3rd.  With 2:12 to go in the 3rd, Mark Homenik hit a nice finesse left handed lay-up to cut the lead to 30-26. Parker Russell finished off the 3rd period with two free throws to make it 34-28.

The 4th quarter saw Berea continue to hold the ball for lay-ups and to run time off the clock.  Two minutes ran off the clock before either team scored, Berea finally hit two free throws to make it 36-28.  Tommy Kuzinar responded with a three point play as he made the basket and foul shot.  Avon Lake went to a full court trapping defense following made baskets, Parker Russell and Kuzniar stole the ball and Russell split the pair of free throws 36-32 cutting the lead to four.  Firment hit two free throws to pull within 2 at the 5:45 mark in the quarter.  But the Braves gained new life with two quick easy fast breaks pushing the score to 40-36 with 3:43 in the game.  Parker Russell cut the lead to 41-38 with a nice power move up the left lane, but, Berea executed a  3-point fast break off the Shoremen press as tired legs were prevailing.  Jeff Ickes cut the lead to 43-40 with two free throws.  However, the Braves attacked the tired Shoremen press like they were at “Custer’s Last Stand” cashing in on two uncontested lay-ups pushing the score out of reach at 47-40 with 1:35 remaining.    The Shoremen found themselves in a must foul position in order to gain possession of the ball.  Unfortunately, the Braves delivered on their free throws down the stretch closing the game out 55-40.   Certainly the Shoremen will want revenge when the Braves come visiting the Shoremen the last game of the season February 15th

Next up Brookside (1-8) at HOME, let’s hope the Shoremen can turn the Cardinals Red and get back on the Winning Ship!
